From IT Assistant to Industry Leader: The Journey of a First-Generation Hispanic-American Dealer

For Boris Lopez, success in the automotive industry began not in the showroom, but in the server room. More than two decades ago in Venezuela, a friend who managed a body shop invited him to help fix computer issues at a local dealership. After solving the problem, he was offered a job as an IT assistant, a role that unexpectedly launched a lifelong career.

From that entry-level position, he worked through sales, fixed operations, and eventually into management. In 2010, he moved to the United States, continuing his partnership with the same family as they purchased a Toyota dealership in Homestead, Florida. Starting once again in IT, he steadily advanced to general manager, then part-owner of a Kia dealership.

Today, he serves as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of South Dade Group, overseeing multiple dealerships and a body shop serving the South Miami and Homestead communities.

Building a Culture of Excellence

Under Lopez’s leadership, South Dade Group has become a recognized name in customer service and operational performance. The organization’s inclusion in the Toyota President’s Club reflects that success, a distinction earned through consistent excellence in sales, service, and customer satisfaction.

Lopez also chairs Toyota’s 20 Group IT16, facilitating collaboration among dealers across the country to share best practices and financial insights.

“It’s about helping each other grow,” he explains. “Everyone brings a different strength, and when we share those lessons, the entire industry improves.”

A member of Automotive News’ 40 Under 40, Lopez sees such recognition as a reflection of his team, not himself.

“It’s never just one person,” he says. “It’s about building a culture where people take pride in their work and support each other’s success.”

As the Southeast representative on the Kia National Dealer Council, he continues to strengthen partnerships between manufacturers and dealers to improve the customer experience and promote long-term growth.

Leading with Integrity and Purpose

“My success comes from discipline, mentorship, and teamwork,” he says.

He credits early mentors Mario and Maria Lucia Benedetti for guiding him to lead with integrity and long-term vision.

“They taught me to make decisions with people in mind, and those lessons have stayed with me in every stage of my journey.”

As a first-generation Hispanic-American dealer, Lopez takes pride in what his journey represents.

“This country rewards effort and perseverance,” he says. “If you’re willing to put in the work, the opportunities are real. The automotive industry is a great example of that. It allows people from all backgrounds to grow, build careers, and even become owners through determination and discipline.”

Giving Back to Move Forward

Community involvement is a cornerstone of the South Dade Group’s philosophy. The organization supports local schools, youth programs, and scholarship initiatives that help students continue their education, especially in partnership with community colleges.

“When the community grows, your business grows with it,” he says. “Success means nothing if you’re not helping others move forward too!”

He’s also passionate about expanding opportunities for future Hispanic dealer principals.

“There’s incredible talent already within our industry,” he explains. “What’s needed is greater mentorship, education, and access to capital. The more diverse our industry becomes, the stronger and more innovative it will be.”

Reflections of Gratitude, Respect, and Patience

Looking back, Lopez says he wouldn’t change much about his journey.

“Every challenge taught me patience; every success gave me purpose,” he reflects. “I’ve learned that if you stay consistent, surround yourself with good people, and stay true to your values, success will take care of itself.”

“This business has given me everything — a career that challenges me, a purpose that drives me, and the chance to make a real impact in people’s lives. I’m proud of what we’ve built, but even more proud of how we’ve built it — with honesty, respect and gratitude.”
