Did you know that cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States? And that the most common reason for a patient to miss treatment is a lack of reliable transportation?
To help cancer patients access the vital care they need, the NADA Foundation announces it is committing $3 million over the next three years to support the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery® program.
Cancer therapy often requires multiple trips each week to treatment centers. And for many patients, especially those already struggling to cover health care expenses, transportation is yet another hurdle to receiving life-saving treatments.
“America’s franchised auto dealers are in the business of keeping people moving, and we are proud to put that mission to work in support of cancer patients across the country,” said NADA President and CEO Mike Stanton. “No one should have to worry about how they will get to their appointments.”
For more than 30 years, the Road to Recovery program has provided over 9.7 million free rides for cancer patients across the country. Just last year, more than 6,000 volunteer drivers provided over 89,000 rides to 7,300 individuals. For every $1 million donated, ACS facilitates between 10,000 and 20,000 rides for patients in need.
“Addressing cancer requires more than medical care alone, it takes communities, volunteers and committed partners working together to support patients every step of the way,” said Nickki Reeves, senior vice president, corporate alliances at the American Cancer Society. “The NADA Foundation's investment in Road To Recovery will help expand access to a critical support service and ensure more people can focus on their treatment and recovery rather than how they'll get to their next appointment.”
The NADA Foundation is leveraging its extensive network of members, allowing individual dealers to engage in various ways, including:
- Providing drivers, which is especially crucial.
- Donating funds.
- Championing the cause by participating in local ACS events, holding events at your dealership, showcasing promotional materials and volunteer information in your showroom, and more.
“Through our $3 million commitment and by mobilizing dealers nationwide, we are harnessing the strength of our industry to ensure that transportation is never the reason someone misses potentially lifesaving treatment,” said Annette Sykora, NADA Foundation Chairwoman. “Dealers help people reach life's most important destinations every day. Our national sponsorship of the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program extends that commitment beyond the showroom, helping patients get where they need to be when it matters most.”
