Automotive News began covering sexism in the industry in October 1991. Twenty-six years later, the leading source of news about the global automotive industry released a landmark survey on sexism in the industry.

Project XX—released by Automotive News in October 2017—came just as the entertainment industry came under media scrutiny for widespread sexual harassment complaints. “Boy, did we look smart,” said Managing Editor Mary Beth Vander Schaaf during a “Women in the Industry” panel discussion moderated by ATAE’s Jennifer Colman at the Live Stage during the NADA Show in Las Vegas.

Nearly 900 women took the survey, which looked at four main areas: feedback and promotion, harassment and safety, inclusion, an unconscious bias. The Project XX survey found that among four top industries—automotive, advertising, tech and market research—the automotive industry had the highest rates of unwanted sexual advances at 65 percent.

Vander Schaaf was joined by Michelle Primm, general manager of Cascade Auto Group and Adam Robinson, co-founder and CEO of Hireology, to discuss the Project XX results and how to make the auto industry a safer, more inclusive and transparent workplace for women.
