Today, the leading voices in the auto sector ran a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal urging the President to rethink his proposal for tariffs on imported automobiles and auto parts.
The president has admirable goals – to negotiate fairer international trade deals, bring back manufacturing jobs, and cut the trade deficit – goals that we believe our country should strive for. But auto tariffs are the wrong tool to achieve those goals – as they would raise prices on new cars, service (because a tariff would increase the cost of parts), and ultimately cost jobs in the auto industry.
