NADA Responds to NHTSA Decision Not to Increase Fuel Economy Penalties for Automakers

TYSONS, Va. (July 15, 2019) – In response to the Trump administration’s announcement not to raise monetary penalties for automakers who fail to meet fuel economy requirements, the National Automobile Dealers Association issued the following statement:

“NADA supports the data-driven analysis and informed process NHTSA undertook in making the decision to suspend the doubling of penalties on automakers for noncompliance with fuel economy standards. The action accounts for today’s market realities and is an important step in maintaining vehicle affordability for American families and consumers. Affordability is key to encouraging fleet turnover—the most successful means to maximize the number of cleaner, safer and more fuel-efficient vehicles we get on the road every year, and in building on the progress the industry has already made on increasing fuel economy and lowering vehicle emissions.”
