For Robert Valdes, his journey from Cuba to the United States (Los Angeles, specifically) translated into opportunity. Not just for personal success, but for something greater—a calling to open doors for others.
He began washing cars on a lot at the age of 16, but sparked by a passion for auto retail, he quickly rose to become a dealer by the age of 28. He is now the dealer principal of Alamo Ford, Lake Powell Ford, Keystone Ford and Ford of Madisonville in Arizona and New Mexico.
In this Hispanic Heritage Month member profile, Valdes reflects on his career and the experiences that continue to shape his leadership. His story highlights a powerful competitive advantage: When a dealership’s workforce reflects the ethnic and cultural makeup of its community, it can build stronger connections, better understand its customers and recognize talent that others might overlook.
For Valdes, Chairman of the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD), representation also means investing in employees, developing future leaders and creating opportunities that extend far beyond the showroom.
