October Sales Recap

Key Highlights for October 2009:

The Auto Industry sold 835,925 units in the Month of October.  This was an increase of 12.3% over September's anemic sales. The SAAR* for month was 11.2 million. This is only the second month in 2009 where the industry was over the 10 million mark.  
 

SAAR (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) is a term used in the industry to depict the selling rate of vehicles for a particular month. In the case of October, the 11.2 million rate indicates that the industry was on pace to sell 11.2 million vehicles on an annual basis. In typical recent years, the industry SAAR has been in the 14 million to 16 million range.
For the month of October, the Detroit 3 captured 45.1% of the industry, an increase of 0.7 points from September 

General Motors sales improved by 5% over October 2008; its share for the month was 21.1, an increase of 0.9 points from a year ago 

Chevrolet sales increased 8.8% from a year-ago. Chevrolet share in October was 13.9% versus 12.8% in October 2008 

GM reported that 89% of October sales came from the four brands that constitute the new GM 

The crossover utility vehicle (CUV) segment continued to show strength; its share of the industry for the month was 21.5%, a year ago the share of industry was 18.1% 

The Hyundai Group (Hyundai and Kia) saw sales increase 47% from a year ago, while Subaru sales grew 44% from October 2008.
