August SAAR Tops 17 Million for First Time This Year

Click to view pdfThere were 1.6 million light-vehicle sales in August 2014, up 10.5 percent from July 2014 and up 5.4 percent from August 2013.

August 2014 YTD light-vehicle sales amounted to 11.1 million, up 5 percent from a year ago. The August 2014 Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate* (SAAR) for light-vehicle sales was 17.5 million, the first time this year that the SAAR value exceeded 17 million sales.

In August 2014 YTD figures, car sales held a market share of 47.7 percent, with sales up 80 basis points from a year ago, while corresponding figures for light trucks put the light-truck share at 52.3 percent, with sales up 9.1 percent from a year ago. (Read more)


* SAAR (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) is a term used in the industry to depict the selling rate of vehicles for a particular month. For example, a SAAR rate of 14 million for a particular month indicates that the industry was on pace to sell 14 million vehicles on an annual basis.
