USA TODAY and NADA in April 2007 presented the Dealer Innovation Award to Kim Maxwell, general manager of Hill International Trucks, LLC, in Washington, Pa. Maxwell is the first truck dealer to receive the award since it was initiated six years ago. The USA TODAY Dealer Innovation Award, conducted in association with NADA, is given out each year to a new car or truck dealer who has implemented effective initiatives that result in measurable improvements for their business and employees, as well as for their community. Sales of new cars and light trucks in 2007 will roughly equal the 2006 sales mark of 16.5 million, according to an economic forecast by Paul Taylor, NADA's chief economist. Speaking at the association’s annual Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas, Taylor reported that a strong U.S. economy and new products on the market, including a wide array of high-quality new fuel-efficient vehicles, will benefit sales throughout the year. NADA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program announced the launch of a joint Energy Stewardship Initiative to help auto dealers improve the energy efficiency of their facilities and operations.The Initiative, unveiled in January 2007 at the Washington Auto Show, provides data, tools and other strategies for dealerships to implement improved energy practices and technologies at their facilities. Led by Senator Trent Lott, R-Miss., Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., and other congressional leaders, NADA and a growing coalition pledged to continue their efforts to pass total-loss disclosure legislation when the new Congress convenes in January.  In a press conference in December 2006, Lott said that he plans to reintroduce legislation in the 110th Congress to reduce title fraud and title washing of insurance-totaled vehicles. The Metropolitan Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association (MAADA) in October 2006 hosted a career event for students as part of NADA's Automotive Career Month. Young people received a "behind-the-scenes" dealership tour of a new-car dealership to see first-hand how the business works in all areas of its operation.

NADA and Bradshaw Automotive conducted a free child safety seat inspection at the West End Field in downtown Greenville, S.C., in 2006. It was the kickoff of a nationwide NADA campaign to educate parents about the importance of child-safety seats, using the correct type of seat for the child's weight and age and teaching them how to properly install the seat. The initiative was part of NADA's Child Passenger Safety Month in September, as thousands of auto dealers nationwide join Bradshaw Automotive in hosting child seat inspection events at the dealerships to help save lives.

This report from 2006 summarizes NADA's support for legislation requiring the disclosure of total-loss data of flood/salvage vehicles to consumers. Buyers currently do not have enough timely access to title data from DMVs or total loss data from insurance companies. Dealers are encouraged to contact their members of Congress to encourage them to require insurance companies to make VINs of totaled vehicles commercially available. Senators are urged to cosponsor S. 3707.
