Winners of 2014 Commercial Truck of the Year Announced

NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 26, 2014) – The American Truck Dealers (ATD) announced today the winners of the 2014 ATD Commercial Truck of the Year, an award recognizing the top truck entries in the heavy- and medium-duty categories. Winners were announced during the ATD Convention & Expo in New Orleans.

The commercial truck maker International was selected as the winner in both categories. International’s ProStar with Cummins ISX15 received the heavy-duty (class 8) award; its TerraStar 4x4 received the medium-duty (Class 3-7) award.

“We are humbled to receive this award,” said David G. Mannella, vice president and general manager of ITA Sales and Service, Harahan, La., who accepted the medium-duty award on behalf of International.

Richard Sweebe, a partner in Summit Holdings, Memphis, Tenn., accepted the heavy-duty award on behalf of International.

Other nominees for the heavy-duty category were the Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck with PACCAR MX-13 engine and Peterbilt Model 579. Nominees for the medium-duty (Class 3-7) were the Hino 195h-DC, Kenworth Class 6 K370 Cabover and Peterbilt Model 220.

The winners were selected by a panel of journalists. Judging categories included innovation, design, safety and driver satisfaction.

The 51st annual ATD event ran concurrently with the NADA Convention & Expo from Jan. 24-27, 2014, in New Orleans. For more information, visit

The 195h-DC is specifically designed to meet the needs of municipalities, construction companies, moving companies and lawn and landscape care companies. The Double Cab 195h-DC utilizes the same award winning 6th generation hybrid system as the Hino 195h. International TerraStar 4x4:
The International TerraStar 4x4 delivers additional commercial duty capability for a wide range of customer needs, including construction, utility, landscape and other off-highway application.  The 4x4 offering boasts true, commercial-duty components including a severe service transfer case from Fabco, a leader in all-wheel drive transfer case and steer-drive axles for medium and heavy-duty vehicles.  Powered by the 300 horsepower, 660 lb-ft. torque 6.4 liter MaxxForce7 engine, the compacted graphite iron engine block provides added strength, without added weight.

The Class 6 Kenworth K370 cabover provides customers operating in urban operations with high Kenworth quality, exceptional styling, dependable durability, excellent visibility, and outstanding ease of service. The 63.4-inch BBC and 55-degree wheel cut gives the K370 nimble maneuverability to help negotiate the unexpected and get in and out of tight spots. The 26,000-lb. GVWR K370 is offered in a 4x2 Class 6 truck configuration, and built on a North American-based chassis.

Peterbilt Model 220:
Peterbilt has launched new design enhancements for the Model 220 cabover to facilitate body installations and operate in unique driving environments that require right-hand drive configurations.  Designed for optimal productivity, Peterbilt’s enhanced Model 200 cabover has paired a lightweight chassis and frame rail with a strategically positioned electrical system to optimize body installation and increase payload capacity.  The Model 220 features an extremely tight turning radius and is available with a RH drive configuration to improve driver performance.  The Model 220 provides exceptional visibility and is designed for maximum driver comfort.

International ProStar with Cummins ISX15:
Improvements to the ISX15, together with the ProStar’s aerodynamic innovations make it more efficient than ever. The smooth lines of the front end and cab assure proper airflow. The ProStar’s aerodynamic efficiency garnered interest from the EPA and the model was used and cited extensively by the EPA when developing the latest heavy-duty GHG benchmarks. The ProStar is more efficient than ever, with ratings up to 550 horsepower and 1850 lb-ft. torque, it has the power to get the job done. The ISX 15 engine’s variable geometry turbocharger enhances response and control with electric actuation for infinite adjustment, providing exact boost at any rpm.

Peterbilt Model 579:
Peterbilt has increased the breadth and functionality of the Model 579 with the addition of a new BBC configuration, a larger, more spacious sleeper, a premium interior package, bright exterior accessories for bold styling, and new 2013 PACCAR MX-13 engine for quiet, fuel efficient power.  The Model 579 is standard with the PACCAR-MX-13, which offers 1,450 to 1,850 lb-ft. torque with horsepower ranging from 30 to 500.  The MX-13 engine is designed to maximize fuel efficiency, reliability and provide a low total cost of ownership and meets the EPA 2013 emissions requirements.
