Kenworth and Hino Trucks Win Top Honors at ATD Convention

PHOENIX (April 17, 2011) – The Kenworth T700 with PACCAR MX engine (heavy-duty) and the 2012 Hino model 338 (medium-duty) were named the winners of the American Truck Dealers Commercial Truck of the Year for 2011.

The top commercial trucks—selected by a panel of journalists from leading truck publications—were announced today at the 48th annual ATD Convention and Expo, which runs through Monday, April 18, at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Bill Kozek, general manager of Kenworth and vice president of PACCAR, accepted the award on behalf of the company’s more than 300 dealers across the country.

Kozek said the T700 was designed with improved aerodynamics, cost of operation and first-class styling in mind. The T700 also provides outstanding driver comfort, advanced technology and excellent residual value, he said.

Sumio Fukaya, president/CEO of Hino Motor Sales, U.S.A, Inc., and chairman of Hino Motors Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc., said winning the award will help Hino achieve its corporate mission “to make the world a better place to live by helping people and goods get where they need to go—safely, economically and with environmental responsibility.”

The other nominees in the heavy-duty category were the International ProStar+ with MF 13 engine and Peterbilt Model 386 lightweight sleeper-cab tractor.

Other medium-duty truck nominees were the Ford F650/F750 Super Duty, International TerraStar, Isuzu NPR Eco-Max, Kenworth T370 4x4 and Peterbilt Model 337 4x4.

The ATD Commercial Truck of the Year recognizes one winner from the medium-duty truck category (classes 3-7) and another from the heavy-duty truck category (class 8). The trucks were judged on innovation, design, driver and owner satisfaction, ease of maintenance and safety.

The 2011 Hino 268 (medium-duty) and Peterbilt Model 384 (heavy-duty) were the 2010 winners.

MEDIUM DUTY

Ford F650/F750 Super Duty 
The 2011 model-year F-650 and F-iSO Super Duty trucks feature an all-new interior and a host of chassis upgrades, providing even greater capability allowing for more flexibility for a wide range of upfits. There are 8 optional front seating configurations and two 3-passenger rear seat options. These seats have been designed to provide greater support and comfort helping to reduce fatigue leading to increased productivity.

 

Hino 2012-model 338
The 2012MY Hino 338 features the J-Series Hino engine, now producing 260 HP with an increased torque of 660 ft-lbs. The roomy cab interior makes the Hino 338 a perfect truck for three man teams, and provides excellent visibility for the driver. For the 2012MY, Hino’s telematics solution, INSIGHT powered by Webtech Wireless, is available to report  up to 50 different vehicle and engine related performance measurements.


International TerraStar
The International® TerraStar™ is a powerful, rugged and reliable work truck. At the heart of the new International TerraStar is its all-new 300 horsepower, 6.4-liter MaxxForce® 7 V-8 engine, delivering 660 lb.-ft. torque. The MaxxForce 7 is matched with a commercial-duty Allison® Optimized 1000 Series transmission to optimize its power output. The TerraStar features a true commercial-duty truck cab, allowing plenty of room for three adults to fit comfortably in the front seat.


Isuzu NPR Eco-Max
Isuzu Commercial Truck of America introduced its new 2011 model year, 12,000-lbs GVWR, NPR ECO-MAX low cab forward truck. The new 2011 model year truck is powered by the next-generation Isuzu 4JJ1-TC diesel engine, which has operated globally in Isuzu trucks for the last five years. This is the first time the engine will be utilized in the U.S. market. The turbocharged, 4-cylinder, 3-liter engine delivers 150 horsepower and 282 lbs.-ft torque. The 4J engine is 2010 EPA and CARB OBD compliant.

Kenworth T370 4x4
The new Kenworth T370 4x4 marks the first time that Kenworth has offered factory-installed, front drive axles in its medium duty product line. The T370 4x4 especially targets utility service, construction vehicles, oilfield service and boom trucks, in addition to municipal applications, such as fire and emergency vehicles. The Kenworth T370’s new front drive axle (Fabco FSD-1XA) is available from a 10,000 lb. to 14,000 lb. rating – when equipped with a PACCAR PX-6 engine; and in a 16,000 lb. rating – when equipped with the PACCAR PX-8 engine.

Peterbilt Model 337 4x4
Peterbilt’s Model 337 is the heart of Peterbilt’s Medium Duty lineup with all wheel drive (AWD) capability offering vocational customers enhanced off-road versatility and maneuverability to meet a wide range of applications including utility and service vehicles. The Model 337 All Wheel Drive configuration features the PACCAR PX-6 engine, with a new 325 hp/ 750 lb-ft configuration and an Allison 3000 RDS-P transmission, making it ideally suited for severe service applications.

  

HEAVY DUTY

International ProStar+ with MF 13 engine
Reintroduced in 2010, the International® ProStar®+ raises the bar with significant weight advantages, class-leading fluid economy and support from its top notch dealer service etwork. The 2010 ProStar+ is powered exclusively by the Advanced EGR MaxxForce® 11 and MaxxForce® 13 (MaxxForce 15 available in Spring 2011). With 475 horsepower and 1,700 lb.-ft. torque, the ProStar+ with MaxxForce 13 has the hauling capability and performance characteristics comparable to many 15-liter engines while delivering significant weight-savings.

Kenworth and its world class engineers were not deterred by the challenges of the 2010 EPA engine emissions regulations. As its answer, the company introduced the T700, which advances Kenworth’s rich aerodynamic legacy by delivering excellent low cost operation. The T700, which targets over the road and team driver operations, also provides outstanding driver comfort, advanced technology, and excellent residual value. The T700’s ergonomic cab has modern dash styling, state-of-art multiplexed instrumentation, and the Kenworth Driver Information Center.

Peterbilt Model 386 lightweight sleeper-cab tractor
The Peterbilt Model 386 Lightweight Specification Package incorporates a number of weight saving features and components. First is Peterbilt’s legendary, lightweight huckbolted aluminum cab, which, in addition to its light weight, is well known for its durability and serviceability. Also important to this specification is the PACCAR MX engine, which saves over 300 lbs. versus a 15L engine, but performs equal to the most commonly specified 15L configurations.
